Yakubu Dogara, a former House of Representatives speaker, and other members of the irate Northern APC have disavowed their support for the Obi-Datti presidential ticket.
After painstakingly going over and evaluating the alternatives, the group has decided to support Peter Obi of the Labour Party and his running mate Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, according to a report on Channels Television by the group’s chairman and former secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal.
Dogara and other group members, however, have backed away from the support, claiming that they still have conversations to wrap up and that their view will be made public.
“We want to bring the public’s attention to the current position that our Chairman, Engr. B. D. Lawal, has been advocating as the position of our Group. The group said in a statement signed by Simon Achuba, Hon. Albert Atiwurcha, Prof. Doknan Sheni, Mela A. Nunge, SAN, Gen. Ishaya Bauka Rtd, Prof. Ibrahim Haruna, and Mrs. Leah Olusiyi that the necessary consultations had been completed and that the group was ready to adopt a position based on empirical data that was “clearly unassailable.”
It suffices to say that nobody in the group, not even the Chairman, has been instructed to address the media about our stance at this crucial juncture. Our perspective was intended to be communicated to the broader public at the aforementioned event, in accordance with our modus operandi. That is still the case.
Therefore, the decision to support a specific candidate and the statement attributed to the chairman are solely his and he alone has the right to express them, not those of the group. We hope that this statement answers all the questions about this extremely important topic that the majority of us have been bombarded with.
